Chesterfield Railway Modellers began in 1981 as The Wingfield Railway Group when a small group of railway modellers had the desire to build, operate and exhibit layouts based on modern railway practice. Since 2001 we have had a clubroom within the Staveley Workshops complex which was previously the British Steel offices situated on Works Road, near Staveley, Chesterfield hence the change of name. Meetings are held most Thursday evenings but members who are working on group and other projects often use the premises at other times.
Currently thre are two operational layouts:-
Hasland Loco Shed is based on the locomotive shed of that name which was located to the south of Chesterfield although the passing tracks are somewhat reduced due to constraints of space. The layout is operated in the LMS and early British Rail eras.
Due to the age of the layout it has recently been modified to be permanently erected in the Clubroom and is unlikely to be seen at exhibitions in future
Stonedale made its first public appearance at the Bakewell exhibition in June 2006 as Stonedale Quarry. This modern era layout was based on a quarry somewhere in the Peak District of Derbyshire featuring a double track main line together with quarry sidings and loading facilities. Modifiations have now been made to the layout making it end to end (rather than circular)with the provision of a terminal station. After being exhibited for a while with the quarry remaining this has now been replaced by a steam and diesel maintenence depot for use by a preservation society reflecting the diverse interests of group members and their collections of locos and coaches.
As well as the Group layouts several members have their own layouts which are often exhibited with help from other members.
The highlight of the year is the Peak Exhibition held at the Agricultural Business Centre in Bakewell, a small town in the heart of the Peak District of Derbyshire. Taking place in early June each year the event brings together a selection of Group owned and/or members layouts together with many visiting layouts from clubs and individuals.
